What is people whacking?

Da siu yan (打小人), literally “hitting petty people,” is a Cantonese folk ritual. A “petty person” is anyone or anything working against you: a backstabbing colleague, a gossiping neighbour, a streak of bad luck.

You write the name of the villain on a paper figure, then a practitioner, usually called a villain hitter, beats it with an old shoe while chanting rhymes that send the bad energy packing. It is loud, theatrical, and surprisingly cathartic.

The practice is part of Hong Kong’s intangible cultural heritage inventory.

How a session goes

  1. Make offerings

Incense, candles and paper money are offered to the gods to ask for their help.

  2. Name your villain

Their name, or your trouble, goes on a paper figure. No names? A generic villain works too.

  3. Whack

The practitioner strikes the figure with a shoe, chanting as it goes. You are welcome to join in.

The paper villain is burned, and the white tiger is soothed with pork fat so it won’t turn on you.
